GM’s going to the auction block. Well, GM’s old cars are anyway. American Public Media reported that GM will clean out its garages and sell at least 200 vintage vehicles at an auction this month.

That’s the plan, anyway.

Some of the cool vehicles that will be sold include the 1996 Presidential Limo, the 1998 Popemobile, a 1904 Olds Touring Runabout, 1931 Olds, a 1948 GMC Fire Truck and an array of Corvettes.

And then there will be a list of not-yet-classic cars like Chevy Silverados, 1978 GMC Suburban, several Hummers and a number of Chevy Auroras.

If all things go well at the auction, GM will save more than $2,000 per year per vehicle in upkeep. And cutting costs (no matter how creative) is definitely the name of the game for GM since it’s virtually out of money right now.

While the plan is to do some early spring cleaning with several old (but new) GM autos, we’ll see how they do amidst the over-discussed sagging economy and global car crisis. Will buyers still be handy with their cash at the auction?

The vehicles will be sold at the Scottsdale, Arizona Barrett-Jackson auction Jan. 11-18, 2009.
