LA Auto Show Opens Gloomily

Usually the Los Angeles Auto Show opens with anticipated excitement as Ford, Chrysler, GM, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes and other car makers unveil their concept cars and new models for the upcoming year. The 2008 LA Auto Show is different.
With reports of massive financial losses and talks of bankruptcy, there'll be little to celebrate this year. An auto analyst said, "It's like having a Champagne party at a cancer victim's funeral."
Car makers are curious if it'll draw those big consumer crowds even close to past years' numbers. Regardless of the struggling car market, car makers will pull out the glitz and glam as best they can to dazzle the automotive press and the consumer masses.
The 2009 Honda Insight will make its North American debut at the LA Auto show, boasting it’ll bump Toyota’s Prius out of the least-expensive hybrid position in the market. Ford will unveil the 2009 Ford Fusion hybrid, Mercury Milan hybrid and Lincoln MKZ, promising the hybrids will have the best gas mileage in the midsize sedan class. Nissan, Toyota and Kia will also bring out new vehicles of their own.
The automotive press will undoubtedly hang on the keynote speaker, Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn’s every word. Ghosn is credited with bringing the Nissan back from the brink of death in 2001, and will have some significant things to say about pulling the nation’s car industry up out of the gloom its facing.
