Car Tips on the Road – Flat Tires

tire car reviews vehiclesNearly every driver will experience a flat tire at least once in a life time. Preventing a blowout on your car is ideal, but here are some safety precautions so you don’t cause a bigger problem with your car if a tire goes kaput:

Preventing a Flat Tire

  • Rotate your car’s tires frequently.
  • Check and check the tire pressure at the gas station at least once a month.
  • Avoid construction sites or roads with highly rough surfaces.
  • Install a tire pressure monitor if your car doesn’t have one.
  • Check your tires’ tread wear using a penny or viewing the wear bar.

What To Do If You Get a Flat Tire
A flat tire can sound like a pop, a strained whirr of air, a rhythmic thud-thud, or you may not hear anything from your car. Regardless, as soon as you recognize something isn’t right, don’t panic. Just think about being safe.

  • Cautiously pull your car out of traffic and stop. Don’t slam on the breaks. Just pull your foot of the gas pedal and let the car slow down. Turn on your emergency flashers. Pull off to the emergency lane, find an exit or a parking lot—somewhere away from busy traffic—and gently come to a stop.
  • Set up your breakdown site. If you haven’t done so already, turn on your emergency flashers. Take out your warning signs (cones, triangles, or flares) and place them behind your car so that others realize that your car is disabled.
  • Get help if you need it. If you’re clear from traffic, go ahead and change the tire. If you don’t know how or need further assistance, raise the hood of your car and hang a white T-shirt or rag out the window or off your car’s antenna. This is a universal sign for vehicle help. Or simply call police.
  • Don't walk in or get near traffic. Does this really need further explaining?
  • Follow up. Take your car to the shop so a mechanic can make sure there's no long-term damage to your car.
